Although the science of orthopedics is centuries old—there is evidence of splints and crutches in use in ancient Egyptian wall paintings—it is constantly evolving.

Once revolutionary techniques, like replacement of arthritic hips and knees, are now familiar procedures performed uneventfully and routinely. Previously impossible advances, like artificial disk replacement, have become possible and will ultimately allow patients struggling with crippling pain to live normal lives.
